Frequently Asked Questions
How long will the Bar Mitzvah training take?
Ideally, between 6 to 12 months.
What is the weekly time commitment?
Approximately one hour per week.
Do we need to be members of a synagogue?
Not necessarily. If you would like Rabbi Misha to officiate, there is a sliding scale membership with our affiliated shul. Alternatively, we can provide a different officiant, and membership would not be required.
What involvement is expected from parents?
Mainly being supportive—helping with scheduling, ensuring attendance, and signing the Bar Mitzvah planning form. Parents typically meet with the officiant once or twice prior to the service.
Are there any requirements regarding the location of the service and party?
No—you're free to choose the venue that suits your family best.
Are in-person meetings required with the parents and child?
Ideally, there would be at least one meeting of the parents, child and officiator of the service.
Are there any expectations or training required for the parents?
No formal training is needed from the parents.
How often are there family check-ins regarding progress?
The teacher will periodically reach out with updates on your child’s progress.
Who would officiate the ceremony?
Depending on your preferences, it could be one of our trained officiants or Rabbi Misha (if you're TNS members).
If the ceremony is outside of NYC, you also have the option to find a local rabbi, with us just handling the training. If we send an officiant, you'd need to cover travel, accommodations. and time for travel.
Are there expectations regarding what the child might need to give up to dedicate time to their studies?
That's up to you and your child. He will need to set aside regular time to practice blessings, songs, and Torah verses once his training begins.
The child has no prior experience with Hebrew or Jewish education. Will that affect the training process?
Yes—in this case, we recommend starting at least one year before the ceremony to ensure he feels confident and prepared.
As a convert, am I limited in participating in any parts of the service?
Not at all! You're fully welcome to participate in all aspects of the ceremony.
